Five hardy Yare crews braved the February chill to compete in the Norwich Head of the River this year.
The 5km race – between River’s Court and Whitlingham Green – was held on Saturday 25th February and even though the weather was grey there were dozens of crews who competed from clubs across the breadth of the country.
It was a windy day and the water was a little choppy, particularly between the Water’s Edge pub and the Postwick road bridge, but that didn’t stop our boats achieving some decent race times.
Andy and Elliot came home quickest out of all the Yare crews with a great time of 20:49 in Division 1. Anthony and David followed them up with 23:17. Our hastily assembled mixed quad did well too, achieving a time of 24:23.
In Division 2, a rusty Mark and Adam jumped in a double together for the first time in a couple of months to complete the race in 23:30. Anthony and Lawrence – in a Yare/Broadland composite boat – did a great job of chasing them down and crossed the line in 22:58.
It was a great day marred only slightly by the late starts in both divisions as it was very chilly for those who had to wait at the open, exposed marshalling area.
There was also disappointment because once again Norwich Rowing Club did not adjust the times for masters’ handicaps. Yare Boat Club could have been at least one trophy better off if this had happened.
However, overall, this was another very well organised event, full of people determined to have a good time despite the overcast skies. Thank you to everybody who supported the race by either competing, organising or spectating. An excellent day was enjoyed by all![Disable Flash Gallery]
