The 2013 Norwich Head of the River Race on the 2nd of March offered competitors a vague sense of possible spring. Waiting to start in the long race in the first division we were all relieved to find that the cold spell from the beginning of the week had given way to warmer weather. Dry, 5 degrees and no discernible wind amounted to ideal conditions for a 5k race and thanks to the effective organisation we did not have to wait very long before the start.
Soon after starting the YBC women’s novice quad was overtaken by Lou and Andy who raced past to claim the victory in the MxIM1.2x class. Finishing on 20:10 they beat both the Norwich RC crew and our YBC/Mortlake composite with Anthony & Joy, who did a great 21:11. The YBC men’s quad – Arthur, Richard, Rod and Andy –was all alone in the MasC.4x- category, no competitors to measure their 19:22 against. James missed out on first place in MasC.1x with 13 seconds on 20:32. The novice women – Ariane, Tina, Simone and Catharina were happy to finish their first race together (and the first official race ever for Tina and Simone who learned to row when joining the club last summer) on 24:01.
The weather remained very pleasant throughout the 2nd division in which James and Anthony, sadly without competitors in MasD.2x, did a fantastic race and shared the fastest double time – 20:22 – with a J18 crew. Ariane and Catharina went across the river to join a composite Norwich/Yare Women’s 8+ that did very well, coming in second in the IM3 class on 22:08.
